What is SEO?

I get asked this question a lot from people i know. It seems many people have heard of the term, but if you aren’t in marketing or working within a business that prioritises SEO - then it’s a bit of a taboo subject.

So, what is SEO?

Search Engine Optimisation is the method of optimising a website so that it can be found in search engines, by people who want to find it.

Many people assume that search engine optimisation is just to do with keywords. Though there is actually a lot more to SEO than keyword research. In fact, keyword research is just one small part of the picture.

What does SEO ENTAIL OF?

If it’s not just keyword research that contributes to search engine success, then what else is done to help optimise website for search engines?

  1. Keyword Research / Competitor Analysis
The research phase of search engine optimisation consists of using SEO tools (paid and free) and techniques to uncover keywords that are best to target for a business.
Keywords vary in competition and search volume. It’s usually best to target different types of keywords with different levels or competition and search volume to give your website the best opportunities to rank for these.

Lots of people think you need a set of 20 or so keywords for your whole website, but it is best to have a set of keywords for each page of your website.
It’s also best to re-do this stage every 3 months so you can stay on top of trends and show search engines you are working to make

  2. On-Page Optimisation
This includes weaving in your keywords to your page copy and meta-data, adding internal links, removing duplicate content, optimising images, and optimising alt tags.

  3. Technical SEO
Technical SEO are the elements that you cannot see on the page. These are things such as website structure/architecture, robots.txt, UX design, URL structure, XML sitemap, and optimising site speed/ page load speed.

  4. Outreach / Link Building
This helps build trust and show search engines you are a valuable website with valuable things to offer.
Whether you are submitting paid content to trusted websites that links back to your website or generating evergreen linkable content on your website (content marketing), link building is an extremely beneficial part to the SEO strategy.
